*** Key deer are a unique species of deer found only in the Florida Keys. They are the smallest North American deer, standing just about 2.5 to 3 feet tall at the shoulder. Key deer are adapted to a variety of habitats but mainly reside in mangrove forests, pine rocklands, and hardwood hammocks. Highly endangered due to habitat loss, vehicle collisions, and other human impacts, the Key deer has been under federal protection since the 1960s. Conservation efforts continue to be critical in preserving this delicate species for future generations.
